Week 3 - Complete - Paintings on Quilted Background

Here are the completed paintings!  I know this isn't for everyone, but I'm quite pleased with the result.  The texture of the pieced fabric shows up well.  In some areas the original fabric is still visible.  The "Week 3 - Palette" post shows the "before" of these paintings.

Week 3 - Palette - Warm and Cool Colors

Cool Colors

Warm Colors

When the Color Wheel is divided in half, there is a warm side and a cool side.  The warm side is predominantly red, orange, and yellow.  The cool side is predominantly blue, green, and purple.  There are varying opinions on where the exact division lies on the Color Wheel.  For example: the red-purple hue can flip over to the cool side, where the yellow-green hue can become part of the warm side.  The photos above show fabric examples of the Cool and Warm Color Schemes.

A picture of the Color Wheel is posted on Thurs, April 26th.

My project this week is an experiment of sorts.  I made a scrap quilt top, dividing the warm and cool colors then making stripped blocks.  The warm area represents a sunset, and the cool area represents water.  The neutral brown/cream area is the shoreline.  I split the quilt top in 2 sections and wrapped it over stretched canvas.  These 2 canvasses will become underpaintings for a modern landscape.

Week 2 - Complete - Denim Curves

I prepared the binding when making the quilt top.

Finished Week 2 - Denim Curved Quilt.
I followed the curves with many stitching lines.
Choosing an orange/yellow variagated thread for the quilting is a complementary color choice for the blue

Week 2 - Progress

The quilt backing is clipped to the table with the largest black office clips, stretched snug.

The batting and quilt top are placed on the top of the backing, smoothed out well.

 Pinned.

Week 2 - Progress

I hemmed my nieces grad dress today.  Then I went to the fabric store for some backing for my monocramatic quilt. Got home and when I went to pin the quilt, realized that I left my big clips at the acreage, so delay, delay.  My husband is stopping to get clips on his way home from work (from the office supply store, not the quilt shop) and I will be pinning the project tomorrow.  Volunteer meeting for the Heritage Park Quilt show after supper.

What I will tell you is that my inspiration for the denim, monocramatic quilt came from this great book!  I love this book and have made many of the patterns and ventured off with it in my own designs.  I wanted to use the denim in the full leg length, so the curved method worked well.

Heritage Park's Quilt Show - This Weekend in Calgary

Here is the link for more information:  http://www.heritagepark.ca/special-events/festivalOfQuilts.php

This is the quilt that I am happy to be displaying in the Group Display.  I made this at a retreat near Calgary earlier this year, taught (and designed) by Catherine Laycraft.  Custom quilting done by Virginia Klarenbach in Saskatchewan.

Week 2 - Palette - Monocramatic

Palette - Monochromatic color scheme
A monochromatic color scheme consists of different values of one single color. These values are lighter and darker than the main color.  In this case I wanted to recycle some denim from my kids old jeans.  I used the denim as the main color and used different values of the blue with 3 different varieties of prints.  Technically speaking, "tints" refer to the lighter values and "shades" refer to the darker values.  This week I am going to quilt a top that I have ready to go.  I will show you this process as I go along.

Free motion quilting in the border.

This border is worked from the back to front and sewn with a fancy machine stitch.  A curvy stitch eliminates the imperfection on the back when using this technique.

Week 1 - Progress

After cutting your small pieces, put them onto a small cutting mat to move them to your machine.

Strip piecing the outside edges is a quick technique.
Sew all your blocks at once to a long strip, then cut them apart.

Blocks at various stages.  Hard to believe that these blocks came from that leafy print.

Week 1 - Palette - Complementary

This Palette is a Complementary Color Scheme, 2 colors directly across from each other on the Color Wheel. The scheme comes from the red and green colors in the print.  Then a different value (in this case a lighter shade) of green has been chosen for the accent color.  A warm brown neutral has been selected to play off the print.  Please see Thurs, April 26th for the Color Wheel.

Color Class!

I enjoyed teaching the Color Class in Laporte this week.  I will be sure to post more info as soon as possible.  I will be adding some links to some of the patterns that we used and some of the techniques that I find interesting.  Will gather the info and post next week.  Thanks ladies for sharing in a fun couple of days...you were such a good group!
